Shatter Your Limiting Beliefs

As an adolescent I found myself struggling with identity. Constantly searching for who I should be and how I could be. When living in a life of lack and limitation you are forced to adapt to the environment around you. With high hopes of your environment to lead you in the right direction you embrace excitement and trends to find your purpose. Listen, excitement and trendy things only last for a moment until the thrill is revealed as counterfeit.

I found myself lost chasing counterfeit pleasures and not true identification of myself, that is a recipe for corruption. There’s a sense of fulfillment in doing the opposite of what you were taught about what’s right and what’s wrong. It’s like the first time your mother told you not to do something, and you were so curious to know why she didn’t want you to. Soon after, you do the thing you were told not to, and you are forever bound to that curiosity, and it grows into an addiction. Finally, that addiction turns into your reality that you created from that wonder of “what if”.

The ‘What If’ method was practiced more often then not where I grew up. I witnessed many people risk and often lose their life for the method of curiosity and still do til this day. Many raised without influence or solid direction to see beyond their circumstances to create the life they hope for. Most have never seen beyond the blocks they were raised on or even witness anyone they’re close to even make an attempt to escape their cycle. All they see is their struggling mother or father (most times the fathers of low income families are absent) sacrificing their happiness and freedom to provide for them. Here is where limiting beliefs are born.

Limiting beliefs thrive on despair and hopelessness. It’s a state of mind, that convinces you that what you see is all you will achieve. The limiting beliefs we have keep most of us from making good choices, taking new opportunities, or reaching our fullest potential.

Growing up I was programmed to believe that dreaming big was a fairy tale, and I surely believed it. I allowed the frame of my life at that time to dictate how far my life could go. I didn’t believe I could actually achieve financial freedom and impact the world in a positive way, all I knew was all I was taught. I had to outsource my counsel to get the confidence I longed for, because no one I could look to had the confidence or knowledge I desired and ultimately needed to go to the next level of life. No shade to them, because we only learn what they are taught or what we observe.

To be quite honest, If I allowed myself to play the victim when I graduated from High School and went to work multiple jobs, I wouldn’t be on the trajectory I’m on in my life right now. I would still be making and thinking less because my belief system would only allow me to believe as far as my mind could see.

Readers, If you allow your current situation to define you, at any point then you headed to inevitable failure. As one of my deans once told me, “there is always someone in the world more lost, broken, and ashamed then you.” So, get off you tail and create the whirlwind of opportunities that’s available to you. Shatter those limiting beliefs because they aren’t real, they are simply barriers that YOU have set up in your own mind. It’s time to escape and conquer!
